| The MLB World
Series is a tradition in American sports that extends back over 100
years. The games are played in October, so there is often a crisp chill
in the air at a World Series game. But the cooler temperatures are
offset by the electricity of the crowd during each game. Each game is
critical to the outcome, so every inning and every at bat are huge. 162
regular season games, and two weeks of playoff games, come down to a few
World Series games. The crowds buzz, the teams are intense and each
player is trying to make that one key play that will be talked about
forever. The original World
Series held in 1903, was a best of nine affair. No World Series was held
in 1904 and the best of seven series was used until 1919. The
five-of-nine format was used from 1919 through 1921, but it reverted
back to a best-of-seven series in 1922. |
 |
That is the same format used
today. The MVP award, started in 1955, is voted on during the final game of
the World Series by a committee of reporters and officials in attendance.
Those great moments at the
World Series are some of the most recognized in sports history. Kirk Gibson
pumping his fist in the air after he hit the game winning home run off
Dennis Eckersley in the 1988 World Series. Joe Carter's exuberance as he
rounded the bases after hitting a "walk off" three-run home run, in the
bottom of the 9th inning, to win the 1993 World Series. The pure joy of the
Boston Red Sox players after clinching
the final out of the 2004 World Series, and ending a title drought that had
lasted since 1918.
The World Series, also commonly known as the "Fall Classic" is the
culmination of the Major League Baseball playoffs. The winners from the
American League Championship Series (ALCS) and National League Championship
Series (NLCS) square off in a best of 7 series. The home field advantage for
the World Series is determined by the league that wins the MLB All-Star
Game. So buy some World Series Tickets and experience this magical event.
